Rockingham Regional Environment Centre (Naragebup)

Naragebup is the first purpose-built environment centre in Western Australia

The Rockingham Regional Environment Centre (Naragebup) is built on one and a half hectares on Safety Bay Road, opposite Australian heritage listed, Lake Richmond, home to two critically endangered ecological communities.

Naragebup is the first purpose-built environment centre in Western Australia,
main building was completed in 2000 and officially opened by Peter Garrett in 2002.
There was minimal construction waste and 92% of the environment building is re-usable.
The front part of the main 'Envirotech' building is constructed of straw bales recycled telephone poles were used for the Envirotech roof.
The premises has no mains water connection but does have 2 rain water tanks and a bore for the Organic Gardens and other Gardens.

Water consumption per annum is approximately 6240 Litres ( about 1.5% of a similar sized organisation). Dry composting toilets save 448.000 litres of water a year approximately 40 solar electric panels ( north facing ) and a Westwind wind turbine which provide 1/5 of ourpower needs. We consume 75% less energy than standard commercial operations.

Building is north facing for solar orientation and assists in temperature control
Wide verandas reduce the summer heat.

We use local tree loppings as mulch in the car park and other areas
Due to high proportion of native garden plants we have many local birds, reptiles insects on site in there natural habitat.
